Die Moral was created as a celebration of my grandparents’ love story and the blending of different cultures. My dad grew up hearing stories from my German grandma’s storybook (located on the table below) that warned him not to play with matches or suck his thumb lest the big tall tailor man come and cut them off. I appropriated the images from this children’s book and combined them with the symbol carved into my grandfather’s family’s hanko, a traditional Japanese stamp used as a signature. They both came from such different backgrounds, but came together to raise a family and build a life together that I think deserves to be shared with people.
The illustrations were made using a paint pen and the symbol was made using a hand-carved linoleum block print.
